who.
Heinrich Stander
I love working in the buildings industry, a people industry where we work with other people to create solutions that improve the quality of life for people and our environment. I believe that we all have a part to play and it helps when we make it enjoyable for everyone on the journey.
For 20 years I have plied my trade as a structural engineer in a multidisciplinary environment, leading and delivering outcomes on different scales of projects across markets.
As a team member I bring a strong cooperative, goal-orientated drive and out-of-the-box problem-solving approach. My local and international experience has added to my tradecraft by understanding different drivers in different markets and responding to it from planning, design and constructability perspectives.
As my career has progressed, I have also become involved in ideation, feasibility studies and strategic master planning. I help clients understand opportunities to develop and redevelop assets by considering opportunities for precinct-wide efficiencies, alongside whole of life considerations that will make future adaptability simpler and more sustainable as needs evolve over time.

Australian Institute for Infectious Disease (AIID) | Melbourne, Australia | University of Melbourne
Structural Lead
AIID will be a purpose built, world-leading biomedical research facility fostering collaboration between scientists and public health experts across multiple organisations.
Through significant optioneering, navigating site constraints and linking the new building to an existing laboratory building on all levels, Heinrich created value by curating a structural design supporting future flexibility whilst minimising embodied carbon.
New Engineering Research Campus Fishermans Bend Stage 1 | Melbourne, Australia | University of Melbourne
Structural Lead
A new vibrant campus for large‐scale research, creating new opportunities for cross‐disciplinary collaboration and partnerships with industry. The research laboratories covers the following research areas – hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, energy, autonomous systems, heavy industrial and structural, geotechnical and robotics.
The project involved the design and delivery of the campus and the integration of the campus within the broader Fishermans Bend precinct. All the research buildings (industrial structural typology) contained vibration-sensitive equipment.
Heinrich led a comprehensive design response exploring low carbon solutions whilst navigating challenging geotechnical conditions, underpinned by design principles of frugality, circularity and adaptable re-use.
CSIRO Clayton Campus Masterplanning | Melbourne, Australia | CSIRO
Structural Lead
CSIRO Clayton is part of the Australian Manufacturing and Materials Precinct. Aurecon were engaged to undertake a condition assessment of all of the buildings on the CSIRO Clayton site to inform a masterplan for redevelopment.
Heinrich led the structural team in delivery of this scope of works. The works were delivered using a digital platform for information capture and presentation.
Cherry Creek Youth Justice Redevelopment Project | Melbourne, Australia | HDR, DJCS
Project Director
Heinrich was the Project Director for this all engineering services project, a new 224-bed Youth Justice facility for remand and sentenced clients, a 12-bed mental health unit, and an intensive supervision unit of at least eight beds. The project comprised the development of an unserviced, greenfield site area of 22 hectares with 50 new buildings and the associated infrastructure. A primary focus of the development relates to vocational training with the associated facilities as part of the youth rehabilitation plan.
